West Mersea Sea Kayaking

Had fun today went sea kayaking with Keith & Michael.  At West Mersea, we started at Seaview Avenue & surfed our way to Cobmarsh mud flats.  Then paddled to Ray Island and stopped for some food on the north side. Afterwards we paddled through the mud flats by the Strood & headed back to the start point.  The tide had turned in our favour but when we went past the house boats the tide had pick up and we had to work very hard to get back to Seaview.

Rivers in Flood

Please be aware most rivers are in flood at the moment.

This can present many issues for anyone one on the river. The river levels are high and normally placid water is now moving fast. Any obstructions like fallen trees or wire fences not normally in the river can prove fatal.

Please be aware!

Croyde Easter

Croyde Easter Surf

Another great Easter Surf trip for Braintree Canoeing Club.

This Easter saw about 45 club members, family and friends brave the cold water for a week’s surf, good food and the occasional drink, at Sunton sands Beach in Devon.

Everyone took full advantage of the surf despite the sea being particularly cold this year and the infamous drought offering up the odd spell of rain. One of my lasting memories of this trip was watching Dave P running around trying to get ready to go surfing at 6.00am in the middle of a hail storm.

It’s good to see everyone getting so much out of the surf. Everyone in their own way trying to squeeze that something extra out of the wave, always looking for that special ride that will last in the memory until the next time.

Then almost too tired to stand up, in fact too tired to even think about standing up, there is that long walk back up the beach, the tide has gone out and the top of the beach has nearly disappeared over the horizon or so it seems.

Oh well happy days!

Canoe Polo Weekends

There are three canoe Polo international weekend events that have been running for years up for grabs. I have been sent invites from the local clubs to form a team and for us to come along to play.
The events are open so anyone can play of any ability and we can even choose a team name to suit!
Liverpool on 2 & 3 June by the lovely Albert Docks next to the Beetles museum. Local hotels are available and nearby camping is offered. Great venue.
Hull in the Kings Docks underneath the shopping centre – dream for paddlers and non paddlers on 7 & 8 July. You can stay at the local hotels or not too far away, camp at a local rugby pitch with discounted Saturday food with a bar provided after a thirsty day of playing canoe polo (or shopping).
Danson Park in Kent being run by Meridian on 11 & 12 August with free camping and a good BBQ laid on Saturday evening.
I have heard rumours of interest, so therefore I offering to organise the Hull weekend. So if you fancy playing for fun, whatever your ability, call me and I will put a team or two to suit your level. The intention is to have fun on a full size pitch playing around 6 games per day.
If you are interested in any of the above weekends, please call Robert for details. 07950012159 / 07720599239

River trip Dedham to Langham Flumes

  • Location:Dedham Mill car park (Google maps)
  • Paddle Type: River
  • Distance: 7.5 miles (round trip)
  • Difficulty Rating: Beginner+
  • License required: Yes
  • Facilities (at Dedham):
    • Coffee shop
    • Toilet
    • Free car park (can get very, very busy during peak times)

This is a river trip for those who are looking to run up stream to Langham Flumes, Langham Weir (Google Maps) stop there for a bite to eat & a rest.   We are going to set off from the car park at Dedham at 1pm on Saturday 12th May.

A fairly easy introduction to river paddling, travelling upstream to start with.  At the end of the route you will come to the weir; the water is fast flowing, and a bit shallow and rocky underneath, so not suitable for lesser experienced paddlers – up to that point it is fine.  There is a portage before the weir, if you want to go along further, but you will need to be fairly comfortable paddling against a current to get to it. Very scenic, with one portage along the route at Stratford St. Mary, before getting to the weir.

It is a round trip of 7.5 miles and takes around 3+ hours.  If you wish to go down the weir you will need a helmet.  It is quite a run for newer paddlers, so some big & little kids might need a rest along the river or a tow, so please bare this in mind.

If you need to borrow any equipment you will need a boat, paddle, buoyancy aid; the club have a limited amount – first come, first served. You will also need to responsible for transporting the equipment to and from the pool. If you wish to borrow the above please see Dave H or me.

If you are coming on this trip can you let Mark Boddington know. To do this please email me at StourTrip@BraintreeCanoeingClub.co.uk

Keep a good look on the Club web site just encase we have to change the info.
