Paddle from Papermill Lock to Sandford Mill Lock on 8th May 2016.

Paddle from PaperMill Lock to Sandford Mill Lock on 8th May 2016.

This paddle is open to all club members and would be suitable for beginners and experienced paddlers.

This is a there and back again paddle of around 3.5 miles each way so 7 miles in total. We will start going upstream and then return downstream with the flow in our favour. If everybody is still fit and having fun and the weather is good there is the possibility of extending the paddle a little further and paddling in towards Chelmsford town centre. When we return to Papermill Lock at the end of the paddle there is a great tearoom for those who want tea, coffee and some nice cake!

This section of the Chelmer isn’t paddled as often as other parts but it is a nice paddle through some lovely Essex countryside. This part of the river is generally slow moving and only has 3 locks which have very easy and short portages. It is an easy relaxing paddle and it is unlikely we will have to deal with any obstructions. Please bear in mind that this river is NOT covered by the BCU licence and you may need to purchase a day licence from the navigation manager.

Meet at 10 am at the PaperMill Lock Tea Rooms car park at postcode: CM3 4BS, map ref:

51°45’03.5″N 0°34’19.6″E

Parking at the tea room is free (as long as some of us buy a piece of cake afterwards!) but if the Tea Room car park is closed there is more free parking either side of the bridge just past the tea room car park. All being well we will be on the water by 10.30 am.

We will stop for a break when we turn around at Sandford Mill so you may wish to bring some snacks and drinks along.

Depending on the weather you might need warm kit whilst out on the river and remember all paddlers MUST wear a buoyancy aid whilst out on the river.

If you need to borrow kit for this trip please email equipment (Mark Boddington or Dave Harris) Equipment@braintreecanoeingclub.co.uk
All the kit must be returned back to the pool and cleaned for the next Saturday.

If you are under 18 years old on this paddle can you fill out one of the Parental Responsibility forms please & have it with you on the day.

Form is here: https://braintreecanoeingclub.co.uk/about/parental-responsibility/

Please email or text Mark or Mike if you are coming along on this trip and all have fun on the river & be safe:)

Hi Anne, Thanks for your message. You and your husband would be more than welcome to come along but there are some issues around insurance/health and safety issues etc so you usually need to be a club member to come along on a club organised trip. However you may be able to take up a temporary membership for the day that would allow you to join the paddle. Please email the club secretary (Email address is in the contacts section of the club website) Kevin Dudley to ask if this is possible. If so Kevin will be able to send you the relevant temporary membership form. Best regards, Mike.
