A fairly easy introduction to river paddling, travelling upstream to start with. At the end of the route you will come to the weir; the water is fast flowing, and a bit shallow and rocky underneath, so not suitable for lesser experienced paddlers – up to that point it is fine. There is a portage at the weir, if you want to go along further, but you will need to be fairly comfortable paddling against a current to get to it.
Very scenic, with one portage along the route at Stratford St. Mary, before getting to the weir. The graphic, below, shows the route we took from Dedham to Langham Weir and back, a round trip of 7.5 miles – one portage is required to get around one lock.
