Portugal Surf

This trip was a mixture of family holiday and surfing based near Peniche, Portugal. We booked our Kayaks on the plane as sports equipment, flew to Lisbon, hired cars and used strap on roof racks to transport the Kayaks. The accommodation was a house in Consolacao with a balcony overlooking the sea (ideal for BBQ’s and eating outside) and we were set for a week of sun and surf.

The first day we went north to Baleal beach and surfed some good shoulders in the kayaks. The body boards were also put to good use. Unfortunately the weather didn’t oblige the next day with overcast skies and strong winds which created massive seas and no rideable surf. A walk round the walled town of Obidos and a walk on the beach at  Foz do Arelho filled the day.

The next day we returned to Baleal, seeking the shelter of its bay, only to find massive dumping waves. The Surf kayaks remained on the cars but Body Boards provided excellent rides.

I walked back to the accommodation (sore feet and sun burn) to see the coast round Peniche, broken cliffs, stacks and big seas. Three days now gone only 1 surf kayak session, not as hoped for but everyone was having a good holiday.

Day 4 found us heading south in sun and calmer conditions to a beach we could see across the bay from our balcony. At first sight this was too rocky but after local advice we walked round the corner to find a small river mouth with a steep sandy beach and an off shore wind . This gave us the steepest waves we have ever Kayaked and a good surf kayak session.

Day 5 found us back in the protection of the bay at Baleal in the sun and a northerly breeze, surfing on 2 well formed shoulders.

Day 6 and back to Baleal with no wind. I surfed in the Bay on the same shoulders and had some superb rides but Bill came over to say Shaun and Ricky had found the perfect reef wave on the seaward beach. This provided the best surf of the trip on a perfectly formed peak, which at times was at least 10 feet high, and plenty of rides with only 4 other board surfers on the wave .

This was a superb holiday with good accommodation, good company, BBQ’s and meals on the balcony, scenery and the steepest biggest waves any of us have ever surfed.
